What is Sustainability?

The responsible and balanced approach to the use of natural resources and the socio-economic development of companies is the essence of sustainability, aiming to ensure the satisfaction of current business needs without compromising the safety and ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Within the European Union, sustainability forms the basis for the achievement of the objectives established by the community strategies, and refers to information regarding the Environment, the Social context and Corporate Governance.

The concept was first regulated by the Directive on non-financial reporting no. 2014/95/EU (NFRD), transposed in Romania by OMFP 1802/2014 and OMFP 2844/2016. Currently, it is regulated by the CSRD Directive, transposed in Romania by OMFP 85/2024.

ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) considerations are similar to the information considered in the context of sustainability, and form the basis of both the Sustainability Report and the ESG ratings.

A number of objectives and policies have been established at European level to promote sustainability and address the challenges of climate change, resource conservation and environmental protection. Among the main European directions in terms of sustainability are:

The European Green Deal

It is the EU's key strategy to make Europe the first carbon-neutral continent by 2050. The objectives of the European Green Deal include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy, improving energy efficiency and protecting biodiversity.

Circular Economy Action Plan

This plan aims to move from a linear economy model, based on resource consumption and waste, to a circular model, where resources are used efficiently and sustainably, and waste is minimized through recycling, reuse and reuse.

Sustainable Development Goals

EU Member States have adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations (SDG), which includes 17 goals. They cover a wide range of issues, such as poverty, education, health, inequalities, climate change and ecosystem protection.

Some directions for applying sustainability

Financial Sustainability

Financial sustainability refers to an organization's ability to manage its financial resources in a way that is viable over the long term. This involves effective cost management practices, responsible investments, and ensuring a steady stream of income that allows for business continuity and growth. Companies that adopt a financial sustainability strategy are better equipped to weather economic fluctuations and invest in sustainable initiatives.

Energy Sustainability

Energy sustainability aims to use energy resources efficiently and responsibly to reduce environmental impacts and ensure the long-term availability of these resources. This includes investing in renewable energy, reducing energy consumption, improving energy efficiency, and developing green technologies. Companies that focus on energy sustainability contribute to reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change.

Sustainability Report

A sustainability report is a document through which an organization communicates its sustainability performance to the public and stakeholders. It includes information about the company's economic, environmental and social impact, as well as the initiatives and policies implemented to improve sustainability. The sustainability report is an essential tool for transparency and corporate accountability, providing a clear picture of the company's commitment to sustainable practices.

Sustainability Plan

A sustainability plan is a strategic document that details an organization's objectives and actions to improve its sustainability performance. It includes specific targets, implementation measures, resource allocation, and performance indicators to monitor progress. A well-developed sustainability plan helps organizations meet their sustainability commitments and make a positive contribution to the environment and society.

Sustainability Policy

A sustainability policy is a set of principles and guidelines that guide an organization's actions in the area of sustainability. It includes the company's commitments to environmental protection, social responsibility, and sustainable economic management. The sustainability policy serves as the foundation for all of the organization's sustainability initiatives and strategies, ensuring that all activities are aligned with the company's sustainable values and goals.
